The Soviet designers The SU-152 armed with the 152mm ML20 Model 1937 gun howitzer was a direct and effective response to the German Tiger I tank which appeared outside Leningrad in 1942. The SU-152 debuted at Kursk in 1943 where they are reputed to have earned the nickname Zvierboy or Beast Killer for their ability to deal with the German Tigers Panthers and Elephants. The JSU-152 proved highly effective not only against tanks, but also fortifications. They are probably best known in the West for their use in the Battle of Berlin. They continued to serve until the 1970s.
